With its countless wrecks, the jagged coastline of Arniston is a chilling tribute to the seafarers of the past. Arniston derives its name from one of these wrecks which sank there in 1815. The vessel was carrying wounded soldiers from Ceylon, via Cape Town, back to England. Heavy winds had destroyed all the rigging and it was eventually decided to cut away the three anchors and run the ship ashore. The Arniston broke up on the needle-sharp rocks of the Arniston Reef. Of the 378 passengers, only 6 survived, rendering this disaster one of the most serious in the history of South Africa.
Arniston not only has great beaches but is the perfect area for going on long walks, bird watching or joining all the other early morning runners for some exercise.  There is also a golf course at Bredasdorp only a 15 minute drive away.
Shark cage diving can be organised in Gansbaai which is only 30 minutes away from Arniston.  Whales come to Arniston each year from April to January (peaking in September and October) to calve and mate.  A trip to Arniston is not complete without a trip to Agulhus - the southern most tip of Africa where one can visit the Lighthouse and Lighthouse Museum.

Writers and painters are known to come here for peace and inspiration. Not to be missed is a visit to Kassiesbaai, which is home to Arniston's fishing community. The little village is preserved intact and provides much of Arniston's old world charm! The entire village of Kassiesbaai is now a National Monument and you have to be born there to be able to live there.

The recently refurbished 5 star hotel attracts both local and overseas visitors.  As well as their bar and restaurant facilities one can also use the internet and Spa facilities
